Police | Citizens Police Academy

The Grand Chute Citizens Police Academy is an opportunity for citizens of the town and surrounding areas to become more familiar with the day-to-day activities of the police department. Participants will learn aspects of police functions and gain a basic understanding of their policies, procedures, and responsibilities.

The curriculum is interactive. Many of the weekly classes involve hands-on type learning experiences, like fingerprint dusting, handcuffing techniques, firearms training, and conducting traffic stops. Participants are also given the opportunity to ride along with an officer and observe first hand how various tasks are accomplished.

Class size is limited to fifteen people. Participation is on a first-come, first-served basis, with preference given to town residents, followed by people who work in Grand Chute, but live elsewhere. Other individuals may also apply as long as there are openings in the class.

To qualify, a person must be at least eighteen (18)  years of age and have no felony, serious misdemeanor, or domestic violence convictions. The program coordinator will verify all information submitted on the application and participants will be notified by mail as to their status.

For more information regarding the program or to have a brochure sent to you via fax or mail call Officer Jennifer Morris at 920-832-1575.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

Mission: To support the Grand Chute Police Department and promote a better understanding and communication between the police department and the citizens of Grand Chute, Wisconsin.

We are concerned citizens taking an active role in helping our local police. Formed by the Citizens Police Academy Class of 2003 who felt compelled to offer time, services, and support to the police department, the Alumni Association we now have members from all graduating classes.

We create fundraisers (candy bars, handmade wreaths, bake sales, brat frys) to help purchase needed items not covered in the police department budget. We also volunteer, giving of our time and talents by helping ease the workload on police department staff, which allows them to better utilize their specialized skills.

VOLUNTEER

The Grand Chute Police Department created a Police Volunteer Section to allow graduates of the Citizens Police Academy (CPA) to donate their time and talents to the police department. These volunteers may or may not be Grand Chute Citizens Police Academy Association Alumni (GCCPAAA) members. Volunteers have become trained SpeedWatch members, provided office support, and assisted with crime prevention events. They have also assisted at a National Police Week Open House and a community-wide National Night Out event. If you are interested in becoming a police volunteer at the Grand Chute Police Department, you will need to take their Citizens Police Academy course, complete the Police Volunteer Section Application, and read the Police Volunteer Handbook. Being a police volunteer is very satisfying and frees up police officer time for other duties.

SPEEDWATCH

In September 2005, the Grand Chute Police Department launched a program aimed at curbing speeding in the Town. There were 14 Citizens Police Academy (CPA) graduates that eagerly signed on for the training. The operations lieutenant created two 2-hour training sessions that covered the policies/procedures for the SpeedWatch program and allowed hands-on training with a radar gun. When trained, the volunteers go out in pairs to designated areas and run radar. A SpeedWatch violation form is generated if vehicles are identified going over the posted speed limit. A courtesy letter is sent to the registered owners notifying them that their vehicles were noticed speeding. This letter does not generate a ticket or go on their driving record; however, it is a reminder that speeding will not be tolerated on Town roads. Today, our SpeedWatch volunteer team numbers 17 strong!

NATIONAL POLICE WEEK

National Police Week is celebrated in May to commemorate officers who have fallen in the line of duty. Each agency celebrates this week in various ways. The Grand Chute Police Department, with assistance from their volunteers, organized a community Open House in 2006 and provided home baked treats, brochures, tours of the department, as well as a visit from McGruff the Crime Dog. It is a small, but personal, way for the police department to interact with the general public, showcase police equipment and vehicles, and describe how the department operates. If you care to learn and experience more in-depth knowledge of policing, consider attending the Grand Chute Citizens Police Academy offered every February.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT

National Night Out is a way to celebrate "America's Night Out Against Crime." This event is always held on the first Tuesday in August. The Grand Chute Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association members use this event as one of their fundraisers. National Night Out is a special community event to help promote anticrime efforts and strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships. We had a static display of police vehicles, brochures, various police demonstrations, an update on crime in the Town. It gave citizens time to mingle with neighbors and friends and ask questions of the officers. McGruff the Crime Dog also made an appearance.

K-9 UNIT PROPOSAL

The Grand Chute Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association (GCCPAAA) is raising funds to establish a Police Service Dog (K9) Program. The K9 unit can provide the department the ability to more effectively:

  • track lost children and people with medical problems
  • locate drugs and narcotics
  • recover cash and property
  • track and apprehend criminals
  • interact with the community
  • deter criminal activity

We are looking to raise $30,000 to cover expenses for the first three years of the program, which covers:

$11,000 | patrol dog with K9 and handler training
$3,000 | miscellaneous equipment (squad insert, cooling system, housing, veterinary exams)
$350 / year | recertification
$200 / year | food
$500 / year | potential emergency and veterinary expenses
$TBD | officer overtime compensation

Fundraising will include a brat fry, chili dinners, and donation banks. We will also seek grant funding as well as donations from corporations and individuals.

The Grand Chute Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association was formed as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, so donations may be used for tax deduction purposes.

Thank you for your generosity in making our community stronger!
